Colville High School Named a 2009 “Great School” Award Winner

For the second year in a row Colville High School has been recognized as being in the top 5% of schools in the State of Washington. Previously known as OSPI’s “School of Distinction”, the Great School award is sponsored by the Washington State chapter of Phi Delta Kappa.  Recipients of this award have demonstrated exceptional improvement in Reading and Math performance over a 5-year period of time.  Colville High School is one of only eighteen schools statewide that have been honored two consecutive years.  The Colville School District is proud of the students, teachers and community that continue make Colville a great place for kids to learn and grow.

CHS Acceleration Friday Starts with a Bang

Friday mornings are anything but business as usual at Colville High School.  In an attempt to increase student success, CHS has implemented a program called Acceleration Friday.  Every Friday from 8:00 until 8:45 am, students meet with their teachers to get extra help.  In many cases students have been assigned by their teacher because they need to make up work, retake tests or need more direct instruction in a particular skill.  Other students assign themselves to work with a teacher because they feel they need help.  In some cases teachers are offering enrichment activities for students who want to expand their knowledge or skill base.  As the year continues there will be changes because this is a work in progress.  But these are the guiding principles to remember:

1)      School starts at 8:00 am

2)      Teachers are expected to assign students who need help.

3)      Students are expected to report to their assigned room at 8:00

Colville High School Excels on State Assessment

Recently the State of Washington released the spring 2009 WASL results.  Colville High School’s results were very strong.  CHS Sophomores scored 90.4% pass rate in reading, 93.8% in writing, 59.4% in Math, and 48.4% in Science. These results are particularly outstanding when compared to the state rates of 80.9% in Reading, 86% in Writing, 45.2% in Math, and 38.6% in Science. Colville High School looks to continue its excellence in the 2009-2010 school year with several new programs such as Navigation and Acceleration Fridays.

CHS IMPLEMENTS ACCELERATION FRIDAYS FOR 2009-2010 SCHOOL YEAR

Over the past several years it has become clear that students are very busy.  Many participate in sports and clubs that keep them busy after school.  Many students also start school early in one of our before school “0 Hour” class offerings.  Add a club meeting at lunch and that leaves absolutely no time for meeting with a teacher.  As well, many teachers coach or advise a variety of clubs which keeps them occupied after school and at lunch.  A common complaint from students is that they don’t have enough time to get extra help.  Teachers often lament the difficulty of finding time to work collaboratively and still have time to meet with students who need help or who want enrichment.

Colville High School has found a way to give teachers the collaboration time they need and provide more time for one on one and small group time with students.  Beginning this school year, students and staff will be participating in Acceleration Fridays.  From 7:00 am until 8:00 am, teachers will work with colleagues in their Professional Learning Communities (PLC). This time will be used to improve the programs CHS offers and to ensure students are getting the very best education CHS has to offer.   From 8:00 am until 9:00 am, students will work with teachers in their classrooms on a variety of activities.  Students will be engaged in anything from making up late or missing assignments and tests, retaking tests and science labs, getting extra help in classes in which they struggle, or participating in enrichment activities in areas that interest them.  Some students will choose where they need to go; others will be assigned a room based on grades, performance and/or discipline concerns.

All first period classes will begin at 9:00 am on Fridays.

College Credit Classes at Colville High School through the Cornerstone Program - Great Opportunity for CHS Students

In an effort to continue to challenge ALL students at Colville High School we will once again offer courses through the Cornerstone program.  Juniors and Seniors at Colville High School (CHS) can earn Central Washington University (CWU) credits while attending certain classes on our high school campus.  These credits are easily transferable to all state colleges and many universities.  Colville High School provides the textbooks.  Also student’s tuition costs are less than if they earned the same number of credits at CWU.  more info
