Learning Standards

State Learning Standards

The following learning standards for subject areas have been established by the state to guide instruction in districts and schools:

District Essential Standards

Content Leadership Teams, Professional Learning Communities, and departments are using the Washington State Learning Standards to identify District Essential Standards for each subject area. These standards delineate the most important skills students should be able to exhibit at each grade level. Having Essential Standards helps focus instruction on foundational concepts. Teachers can then build on those standards in order to promote learning opportunities for all students.

Essential Standards have been identified and adopted for K-12 reading and writing and for K-8 math. (View by content and grade level below.) Teams of teachers are developing or finalizing standards for science, physical education, and music. Work has also begun on social studies and other subjects.
