WASL testing April 15 -18  Assessments as Indicators of Student Learning

• The Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) is a STANDARDS-BASED assessment of student learning in grades 3-8 and grade 10. A STANDARD- BASED assessment measures some (not all) of an individual student’s learning in relationship to a LEARNING  STANDARD. Standards of performance are not limited to schools. A driver takes a must meet a performance standard of safe driving to acquire a license; an electrician must demonstrate a performance or knowledge level/standard to become licensed, as does an attorney, a physician, any many skilled technicians.

• The WASL provides feedback to students, parents, schools, and districts on how well individual students are meeting Washington’s learning standards. The WASL is not a separate, unrelated test. It assesses what students are learning on a daily basis in classrooms and provides some information on how well students are learning the standards. Few people would go to the physician for medical tests and not want to know the results of those tests as indicators of good health.

• Students, parents, and school staff also need to know the status of student learning in relationship to the LEARNING STANDARDS.  The WASL provides that information as does teacher classroom assessment.

• WASL testing will begin next week.

Public Hearing - K-12 Student Achevement Improvement Funds (I-728)

The Colville School District will hold its regular board meeting on April 23, 2008, 6:30 PM at the Colville School District Office.  During this time, a public hearing will be held to discuss plans on how to use K-12 Student Achievement Improvement Funds (I-728) for the 2008/2009 school year.  The public is invited to attend and provide input on the best use of these funds.  Written input will also be accepted at the Colville School District Office until April 23, 2008, 4:30 PM and also at the hearing.
